Remedial Massage v Musculoskeletal Therapy
Looking for Remedial Massage in Grafton?
Excel Musculoskeletal Therapy (EMT) provides comprehensive physical therapy designed to restore balance to the body and resolve both acute and chronic injuries.
Grafton remedial massage treatment is limited to focusing on a particular, location specific injury. Most remedial massage therapists in Grafton do a great job in loosening you up. While this certainly provides relief, it maybe temporary. This is generally because other components of your injury have not been addressed, such as hip imbalances, leg length discrepencies, sacral deviations and muscles that aren't firing. At (EMT) we have quite a different approach.
By contrast, musculoskeletal therapists look at the whole body to identify the underlying causes of injury and achieve sustained recovery. In fact, remedial massage that is carried out without an awareness of underlying conditions can do more harm than good - see Soft Tissue Massage. Below we outline some of the specific differences in treatment modalities between musculoskeletal therapists and remedial massage therapists.
Posture Analysis
At Excel Musculoskeletal Therapy, Jason does a thorough check of the entire body to see which joints are causing problems. He assesses things like hips, spine, sacrum, leg length to name a few. This allows us to correctly assess the overall condition of the body, as well as compare results from one treatment to the next, tracking recovery and fine-tune your treatment over time.
Standard remedial massage services providers do not provide postural analysis, which means important issues will not be picked up or addressed as part of your treatment.
Movement Analysis
Jason gets you doing functional movements, active and passive, stress and balance tests. This overall assessment determines the underlying issue and cause of your pain, opposed to focusing simply on the pain site itself.
The thorough movement assessment, as performed by Jason, helps determine how best to address your pain and achieve sustained recovery (in fact, in many cases the area you're experiencing pain is not where the pain - or imbalance - actually stems from!).
Standard remedial massage services providers do not provide movement, which means important issues will not be picked up or addressed as part of your treatment.
Soft Tissue Massage
Some therapists are trained to release tight muscles. However they often don't realise the tight muscles are trying to stabilise problematic or weak muscles - and to release them may cause more harm than good. For this reason, soft tissue massage should always be used carefully.
As a musculoskeletal therapist, Jason uses postural and movement analysis to identify the underlying cause of injury and provides careful, appropriate soft tissue massage as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.
Remedial massage therapists are not always aware of these important considerations related to soft tissue massage, meaning your treatment could be hindering rather than helping your recovery from injury.
Kinesio Taping
Kinesio taping, as practised by Jason, uses a unique crinkling effect in the tape that when applied correctly increases lymphatic blood flow and stimuli which allows the body's natural healing process to take place.
Very few remedial massage service providers adopt this aspect of treatment.
Personalised Exercise & Stretching Program
At Excel Musculoskeletal Therapy, Jason conducts strength tests to determine which muscles are doing their job. He also conducts a range of movement check to see which muscles are restricted. He will then give you a personalised program specifically for your individual needs. Your personalised program addresses all aspects necessary for full and sustained recovery.
Of course, we also re-asses your prescribed routine during the course of your treatment, refining and fine-tuning your exercise and stretching routine as you progress to achieve maximum benefits.
With a focus on standard soft tissue massage, remedial massage therapists generally do not have the training or experience to provide personalised exercise and stretching programs.

Alignments
Some therapists use high velocity adjustments to achieve their results, which sometimes can be very unpleasant and painful (e.g. cracking the neck or back).

Kind Words About Excel Musculoskeletal Therapy
Have seen many hundreds of sports massage therapists, chiropractors, physiotherapists and osteopaths over the years, so know a good practitioner when I see one.
Very impressed with Jason's assessment and treatment, combining massage with osteopath techniques, along with chiropractic adjustments.
Fraser J.
I cannot speak highly enough of his expertise, professionalism, and ultimately his results. My husband's shoulder is now moving, my hips, neck and shoulders are so much better and he has rectified our adult son's back issues.
